Come and join us on 14th March for our "One Night Beyond" Ska and Reggae night at our speakeasy Bar at Eleven Bridges. Enter through the bottle shop at the front to a wicked hidden venue at the back. We will be spinning Ska, Two-tone, Reggae, Rocksteady, Blue Beat, Dancehall and Dub all on original vinyl. This is a popular event and a small venue, so only 150 guests, book your tickets now before they go, only $15.00 each.
Doors open at 6.30pm. An explanation of the music styles is below:
Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, blending elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It's characterized by a fast tempo, prominent bass lines, and a distinctive "offbeat" guitar rhythm.
Ska is cons.
Two-tone, also known as 2 tone or ska revival, is a British music genre that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s, blending traditional Jamaican ska, rock steady, and reggae with elements of punk rock and new wave. It's characterized by its energetic rhythms, upbeat tempos, and often socially conscious lyrics, reflecting a multicultural and anti-racist message.
Dancehall is a vibrant genre of Jamaican popular music that emerged in the late 1970s. It's characterized by its fast-paced rhythms, often built on digital instrumentation, and the toasting or rapping style of the deejay over prerecorded tracks. Dancehall has significantly influenced other music genres, particularly hip-hop and dance music, and has its own distinct dance styles.
Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. It evolved from earlier Jamaican styles like ska and rocksteady, and is known for its distinctive offbeat rhythm, emphasis on bass and drums, and often socially conscious or spiritual lyrics.
Rocksteady is a Jamaican music genre that emerged around 1966 and dominated until 1968, acting as a direct, slower-tempo bridge between ska and reggae. It is characterized by a "one-drop" drum beat, prominent bass lines, and soulful vocal harmonies, focusing heavily on romantic lyrics.
Blue beat is a 1960s genre of Jamaican popular music, often synonymous with early ska and "Jamaican rhythm and blues" which served as a direct precursor to reggae. It was popularized in the UK by Blue Beat Records, featuring artists like Prince Buster
Dub primarily refers to a genre of electronic music originating in Jamaica in the late 1960s/early 1970s, which remixes reggae tracks by removing vocals, emphasizing bass and drums, and adding heavy effects like echo and reverb.
