Immerse yourself in the power of music and the echoes of history in Stockholm’s Old Town! Nobel Prize Museum, Medieval Museum, and Storkyrkan invite you to a journey through time and sound. In English.During the summer evening event “Tunes in the Old Town,” history, knowledge, and music are woven together. A combined ticket gives you access to a guided tour, a walk, and a concert.
At the Nobel Prize Museum, you'll hear about Nobel Laureates and their connections to music. The Medieval Museum offers a short walk that highlights the role of music in medieval Stockholm — from the city’s jesters and pipers to the church’s songs and rituals.
The evening concludes with an atmospheric organ concert in the magnificent Storkyrkan, over 700 years old. Let yourself be uplifted by the timeless works of Johann Sebastian Bach, performed alongside masterpieces by other great composers, in the awe-inspiring setting of Storkyrkan.
Before the concert, you’ll also have the opportunity to explore the church interior on your own — something that normally requires a separate entrance ticket.
Programme
Nobel Prize Museum: Music as motivation
What did the poet and Nobel Prize laureate Louise Glück find in the composer Gustav Mahler’s music that inspired her acclaimed poetry collection Averno? The guided tour at the Nobel Prize Museum offers insight into the background of the Nobel Prize, and explores how music has played a vital role in the work and creativity of Nobel Prize Laureates.
Medieval Museum: Time to Play! Music in Medieval Stockholm
What did Stockholm sound like in the Middle Ages? With instruments like bone flutes, jaw harps, and ocarinas, the city’s performers and jesters amused the townspeople. Music and songs were viewed differently back then, but often served the same purposes as today — bringing comfort and joy, telling stories and myths, and playing a key role in church rituals. Listen to tales of the music and sounds that echoed through the streets, squares, and churches during the Medieval Museum’s walking tour.
Stockholm Cathedral: Bach goes…
In the cathedral’s concert series Bach goes…, the timeless music of Johann Sebastian Bach meets new interpretations. Bach’s baroque tones are reimagined by contemporary musicians on the church’s Marcussen organ from 1960. Next to the grand organ is the ornate organ loft, with a balustrade and façade designed in 1787 by architect Erik Palmstedt.
