UK-based sarod virtuoso Soumik Datta presents a powerful musical journey through migration, memory, and shared humanity.
Award-winning composer and performer Soumik Datta unveils a genre-blending soundscape where Indian classical roots meet ambient textures, spoken word, and field recordings. At its heart is the sarod’s evocative voice, layered with violin, tabla, and percussion to create what Soumik calls “ear cinema”.
The performance carries audiences across invisible borders, weaving together fragments of memory and lived experience. Cries of refugees, reports from Gaza, and the haunting voice of Oppenheimer rise through the music, underscored by immersive sound design. Inspired by encounters at airports and borders, ‘Travellers’ offers a timely reflection on migration, belonging, and our shared humanity across continents and generations.
Part of Soumik’s seven-month Melodies in Slow Motion tour across India, this concert extends beyond traditional venues into homes, schools, heritage sites, and community spaces, amplifying voices often left unheard. He is joined by Sayee Rakshith on violin, Debjit Patitundi on tabla, and Sumesh Narayanan on mridangam & percussion.
Winner of the Aga Khan Award for Music, Soumik is a visionary artist whose work bridges cultures, genres, and urgent social themes. A disciple of maestro Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta, he has reimagined the role of the sarod in contemporary music, collaborating with icons including Beyoncé, Nitin Sawhney, Akram Khan, Anoushka Shankar, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Described by Vogue as “one of the biggest music talents in Britain”, he continues to expand the boundaries of performance through concerts, film scores, and projects with his charity, Soumik Datta Arts.
