About this Event
Souls on Stage: Grazia Deledda and Eleonora Duse is a one-day public engagement theatre workshop organised by Dr Elena Sottilotta (Murray Edwards College) and led by theatre director Ludovico Nolfi. The workshop will explore the artistic legacies of Grazia Deledda (1871-1936), Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, and Eleonora Duse (1858-1924), internationally acclaimed theatre actress, through a creative process that combines improvisation and performance. Both pioneering women in their respective fields, Grazia Deledda and Eleonora Duse are connected through a significant moment of artistic convergence: Duse’s artistic endeavour in the silent film Cenere (Ashes, 1916), directed by Febo Mari and adapted from Deledda’s novel. This workshop builds on that unique intersection and brings into dialogue two significant anniversaries: the centenary of Eleonora Duse’s death in 2024 and the centenary of Grazia Deledda’s Nobel Prize in Literature in 2026. The event has been made possible with the support of a Judith E. Wilson Small Grant Award. On this occasion, an exhibition of books from the Murray Edwards Eleonora Duse Collection will be on display.
