Why this matters:

• Over 6 million people in the U.S. live with dementia today. That number is expected to double in the next 20 to 25 years.
• 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
• Nearly 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for someone with dementia.
• Caregivers often provide 20 or more hours of care each week. Many do this for years.
• Caregivers face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and chronic illness.
• About 30 percent of dementia caregivers pass before the person they support.
• About 20 percent of older adults are aging alone with no built in support system.
• Dementia care costs more than heart disease or cancer in total U.S. spending.
• Most families wait too long to plan. Decisions then happen in crisis.
• Early planning leads to better quality of life, less stress, and fewer unwanted medical interventions.
