Sorcha Shanahan is from Derry. She trained as an actor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and has toured the UK, Ireland, Europe and USA with various theatre productions. Over the years she has worked as a comedian, production manager, producer, drama facilitator, project manager, researcher, writer, director and street performer.
Highlights include: writing a play about women during the Plantation of Ulster; winning the Panel Prize at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival's Comedy Awards 2016; and being one half of the comedy storytelling duo, MakeyUppers, with her best friend Gemma Walker Farren.
She has a PG Dip in Trauma Studies, and is passionate about using play as a tool for self discovery and social change. As well as creating and performing characters, she works with organisations to create and deliver bespoke drama and storytelling projects for groups of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
Sorcha Shanahan and Gemma Walker-Farren are ‘MakeyUppers’, an original comedy storytelling act. They use their skills as performers, facilitators and theatre makers to create dynamic and involving storytelling. They aim to engage their audiences in experiences that are multi-layered, highly enjoyable and beautifully simple.
The ‘MakeyUppers’ work is hugely diverse and ever changing but always rooted in a mutual desire to create meaningful work through play. They are 'Serious Eejits'.
They perform multi-disciplinary, high-energy, comedy shows as well as interactive, intergenerational storytelling workshops, a range of walkabout characters and bespoke workshop/performance packages for community and corporate events.
