SONIC WORLD BUILDING: Expanding Sound Design

Even for seasoned producers, approaching the sound design of a piece you’re working on can sometimes feel intimidating and overwhelming. This one-day deep dives offers a unique experience for audio makers. You’ll have the chance to learn from some incredible talents in audio, working with sound in beautiful and innovative ways. But you’ll also be able to spend some time hanging out with fellow audio makers, sharing challenges and trying things out in a zero pressure playful environment.

The first masterclass is led by the award-winning Arlie Adlington; he’ll lead a session on crafting rich, immersive environments for narrative work, sharing practical techniques for shaping atmosphere and sound worlds to support storytelling. Arlie has extensive experience as both a producer and a mix engineer, and will guide participants through his process, including tips on how to get the most out of working with music libraries and pre-existing sound elements.

Afterwards there’ll be a session with Tullis Rennie, a sound artist and composer known for blending field recordings, experimental music and community-led practice. Tullis will demonstrate unexpected approaches to designing audio worlds - from creating your own source material to working playfully with texture and abstraction. He’ll prove that you don’t need to be a professional musician to use simple instruments and tools and start composing for your own audio work.

Between the two sessions, we’ll hold a peer to peer workshop where participants submit sound design challenges they’ve faced in the past and we work through them together as a group, sharing ideas and creative solutions.

People at all stages of their audio making journey are welcome to join, however the sessions will not cover audio editing for beginners. Therefore we would recommend that attendees have at least some experience of creative production themselves in order to get the most out of the day. We'd recommend bringing a laptop with your chosen DAW in case the opportunity arises to play with some sound design techniques there.

About Tullis:

Tullis Rennie is a composer, improvising trombonist, electronic musician, and field recordist who "foregrounds the act of listening as an active component in the creation of musical experience” – The Wire Magazine. His latest album Safe Operating Space (2024, Efpi Records) is a hybrid of club music and acoustic free improvisation, reflecting on themes such as global heating, AI-generated deepfakes, family life, and Kate Bush. His work encompasses sound installation, community-engaged participative projects, multi-channel concert works, video, mixed media and live/improvised performances – presented across 20 countries, alongside broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, NTS and ResonanceFM. He is co-founder of community arts action group Walls On Walls, and of Barcelona-based audio-visual collective Insectotròpics. Tullis's precious studio release was Fixed Freedoms (2022) on Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Jnr label, described as “a mutated set of electronic experiments that bends recognisable formulae (trance, dub techno, electro) into abstract landscapes" — Boomkat. His work is also released by Moving Furniture Records, Flaming Pines, Luminous, a new wave of jazz and ZeroWave.
