About this Event

Red-Winged Blackbird Records, an organization devoted to the preservation of American roots music through education, events, and legacy-building, announces its inaugural Songwriter Showcase at Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol, VA, November 16, 2024 from 7:00 - 10: 00 pm.

The evening will contain performances by host Katie Powderly, who took home trophies at both the 2023 and 2024 Tennessee Songwriters Week qualifying rounds held at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, as well as Chancellor Lawson (2022 Tennessee Songwriters Week Winner) and Sela Campbell of Loudoun Country, VA, 2024 American Idol Golden Ticket Winner.

ABOUT KATIE:

“...inhabiting the same musical geography as Gillian Welch and Aoife O’Donovan, fiddle and guitar combining to create a sublime bluegrass ambience.”

– Americana UK

...Powderly possesses a singing style similar to Gillian Welch, Natalie Merchant, and Emmylou Harris in its soft sensual delivery.”

– The Alternate Root Magazine

"[Katie's]....ties to Bristol almost make her an honorary native. A number of past Bristol Rhythm artists have recorded on her first album, Slips of the Tongue, including Josh Oliver (Watchhouse), Tom Pryor (The Black Lillies) and Jill Andrews.

Katie took home trophies at both the 2023 and 2024 Tennessee Songwriters Week qualifying rounds held at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum.

Her latest EP, Live by the Song, Die by the Song, is an intricate and deeply moving 5-song treasure. Though she's been touring for over a decade on her own and with other bands, she has yet to be "discovered." In our eyes, she's a star and the bestie we all need."

- Voice – Magazine for Women

ABOUT CHANCELLOR:

"Chancellor Lawson is one of those kinds of songwriters that stops you dead in your tracks. The kind that makes a noisy barroom suddenly quiet, everyone rapt and listening.

It's not just his guitar playing, or his singing, or the lyrics themselves that get you. It's some kind of glory that emanates from his being when all of those elements converge and radiate out of him.

Some folks can sing pretty good or pick a guitar. But few people can name the truths of life simply and artfully in a way that sticks with you over time, his words turning over in your mind as you quietly go about your day."

- Katie Powderly
