SONGS WE LOVE (by Oksana Parshenko, Alik Alabin, Sasha Nikitin)
The program we present consists of Ukrainian and American songs from the fifties, sixties and seventies that we love: you’ll hear reimagined and recomposed jazz standards as well as Ukrainian pop and folk songs. Alik and Sasha rearranged well-known compositions, infusing old folk classics with a new and updated beat and harmony. As of the jazz standards, we went back to the original song format, recovered forgotten intros, and brought forth the meaning of the lyrics.
Oksana Parshenko – voice
Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Oksana Parshenko is a vocalist and songwriter known for her romantic, lyrical delivery of her original compositions, Ukrainian popular and folk songs. Since immigrating to the United States in 2022, she has been performing as a duo with her husband Alexander Alabin, and in a variety of ensemble settings, continuing to share her distinctive blend of heart-felt sincerity and musical artistry.
Alik Alabin – piano, guitar
Also born in Odessa, Ukraine, Alik has been composing original songs and performing since he was sixteen years old. He graduated from The New School University in Jazz Composition and Arranging in 2001 and has been working as a professional performing musician, composer, arranger, and educator domestically and internationally ever since.
Sasha Nikitin – guitar, voice
Graduate of the Soviet Gnesinsky Music School for Children as a pianist, Sasha is mostly self-taught as a jazz guitarist and singer. He has also been performing on stage with his parents Sergey and Tatiana Nikitin, a renowned Russian folk-song duo, since he was 15. He owns a sound recording studio Chesapeake Records in Maryland and continues working as a producer, arranger, and audio engineer.
Doors open at 7 pm. Entrance is $50. Contact is Jenya (857)636-0893 (text) or [email protected] – inquire for details.
