In Brazil, the word “massa" can refer the a staple food made from the starchy cassava root. Or it can be the people themselves, the masses. In Pernambuco, it’s a ubiquitous affirmation. A transcontinental collaboration between Ju, a Seattle-based pernambucana, and Sky, a Massachusetts-based gringo, Som da Massa is the sound of these things. The project brings Northeastern and Northern Brazilian Northeastern traditions like baião, ciranda, ijexá, and carimbó into conversation with 70s-inflected MPB and contemporary international styles, weaving stories, rhythms, and voices across borders. Som da Massa’s debut album O Amor e o Som e a Dor is scheduled for release in 2026.https://www.instagram.com/som.da.massa/
