SOLARIS was one of Akira Kurosawa's favourite films. Steven Soderbergh remade it. Salman Rushdie called it an "exploration of the unreliability of reality and the power of the human unconscious."
This is your chance to find out why it was named as the 6th best sci-fi/fantasy film of all time.
Legendary Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky wasn't a fan of sci-fi, but decided to adapt StanisΕ‚aw Lem's 1961 novel partly to get around Soviet censors and partly as a response to 2001: A Space Odyssey - which he called "lifeless" and "phoney"! Following Solaris, he returned to sci-fi a few years later with the astonishing Stalker (which we screened in 2019). Believe it or not, Solaris is one of Tarkovsky's more accessible films - join us at our June screening for a rare chance to see this haunting, weird epic in a cinema.

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… "The third feature in Tarkovsky's brief, shining career will deliver you from the mundane to the sublime. An extended, cinematic poem" Desson Howe, Washington Post
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… "Solaris proves the yin to Kubrick’s yang... if 2001 is the intellect, the mind, the more mathematically precise and optimistic of the two, then Solaris is the messy heart of inextricably entangled emotions" Rob Humanick, Slant
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… "Profoundly beautiful and disturbing" Lucie K Scheuer, Los Angeles Free Press
