About SoHarlem

SoHarlem is a Designers’ Studio in Harlem serving as an incubator for fashion designers, and training for the Harlem community. SoHarlem’s mission is to support racial equity and employment in Harlem by incubating creative enterprises that incorporate sustainable business models.

Over the past twelve years, SoHarlem has launched more than 20 successful micro-businesses comprising everything from custom-made, couture garments to fashion accessories and face masks. SoHarlem’s Creative Entrepreneurs include Henry Smith, Olivia Smashum, Javier Valencia, Gladys Perez, Donna Drew, and Jacqueline Puello-Raboy. Designer Apprentices are Noah Josēph, Tre Milan Buchannan, Roselyn Grullon, and Walter Dixon. SoHarlem provides a free 30-minute Design Consultation for emerging designers seeking professional development, or an established designer interested in a peer-to-peer exchange.

SoHarlem’s Creative Economy Training Institute is open to under and unemployed local residents, at no cost to them. Participants receive workforce training on the fundamentals of sewing and are placed to work in the fashion industry via the Creative Economy Institute’s 12-week training program.

Additional programming available to the public for a fee, includes: the Learn to Sew Program, which is open to the general public, participants learn sewing at a technical level to expand their creative knowledge as well as help developing their designs via an 8-week weekend program. SoHarlem’s Made to Measure program is open to the public and includes original design, pattern making, measuring, garment construction, fittings and adjustments based on pricing tiers based on the complexity of design, and types of patterns. Custom Tailoring services is also available and begins with an initial between the client and SoHarlem to determine the type of service needed.
