Ekaterina Zhuravskaya is Professor of Economics at the Paris School of Economics and a leading scholar in political economy, historical institutionalism, and digital media. Born in Moscow, she received her PhD in Economics from Harvard University in 1999. She subsequently served as Professor at the New Economic School and as Academic Director of the Center for Economic and Financial Research for a decade in Moscow. Following the deterioration of media and academic freedoms in Russia after Vladimir Putin’s war in Georgia, she relocated to the Paris School of Economics.

Her research has been widely published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the American Economic Review, where she has served as co-editor since 2023. She is a foreign honorary member of the American Economic Association.

Her recent work examines the effects of internet-based media and digital networks on political behavior. In particular, her latest study analyzes the algorithms of X (formerly Twitter), owned by Elon Musk, and their impact on political attitudes. This research was published in the February 2026 issue of Nature.

In her presentation at the NYU Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia series “Russia and Its Neighbors: In Search of a New Paradigm,” with Dr. Yevgenia Albats, Professor Zhuravskaya will present the findings of her research on social networks and their impact on politics.

This event is co-sponsored by the NYU Department of Russian and Slavic Studies.
