About this Event
Supported by the Language, Literacies and Education Network (LLEN) come and join us for an engaging talk by Darío Luis Banegas who will share his work on social justice in English language teaching.
Social justice in English language teaching: From conceptualisation to enactment
Abstract:
What do teachers’ and student-teachers’ think of social justice in English language teaching (ELT)? What happens when they embed it in their teaching practices? What kind of support do they need? What dimensions of professional knowledge do they exhibit? In this talk I will address these questions by discussing these findings from a collaborative action research project carried out by a group of secondary school teachers, student-teachers, and their learners in state secondary schools in Argentina in 2022-23. I will particularly discuss sites of alignment and tension in relation to relevance, democracy, and representation. I will put forward a characterisation of social justice pedagogy in ELT and implications for teacher education.
