Gather at 6pm, ride at 7pm.Slow Roll Cleveland will kick off its lucky 13th season in Ohio City. Part of our slogan is “bridging communities through inclusive social bike rides,” and this season opener spot is a great reflection of that mission.
Before we ride, here’s a quick piece of Cleveland history: the Battle of the Bridge, a time when bridges divided communities instead of connecting them… clearly before Slow Roll Cleveland existed (because, bikes fix everything).
In 1836, Cleveland and Ohio City stood divided over competition for industry, growth, and control of commerce along the river. Despite Cleveland’s larger population, Ohio City remained a strong economic force. That tension ultimately led to the Battle of the Bridge, when residents clashed over access to the Columbus Street Bridge, a key route that determined where business and opportunity would flow. What was once a fight over connection became one of the most defining moments in the Ohio City’s early history.
Today, that same bridge can be seen with bicycle riders instead of rivalry (we are not going to mention cars here), connecting to the city, linking up with nearby trails, and bridging Cleveland together.
