About this Event
The Slow Fashion Sewing Series – PART 2
For Adult (Slightly Advanced) Beginners
Ready to take the next step in your sewing journey?
At The ReDress Hub, we’re passionate about helping people embrace circular fashion—keeping clothes in use for longer, reducing reliance on fast fashion, and cutting down on textile waste.
Following the success of our beginner series, we’re excited to offer Slow Fashion Sewing Series – PART 2, designed for adults who already have some basic sewing skills and want to build their confidence further.
Guided by passionate maker Kirsty Máté, you’ll expand your sewing skills while making a classic shirt—choosing either a women’s or men’s pattern. Along the way you’ll learn techniques including collars, sleeves, optional patch pockets, and buttonholes.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a shirt you (or someone you love!) will be proud to wear.
What you’ll learn over 3 weeks
Week 1 – Garment Overview & Construction
We’ll begin sewing straight away, so your fabric pattern pieces will need to be cut out before class. In this session we’ll cover the pattern overview, seams, optional patch pockets, and collar construction.
Week 2 – Garment Construction
Learn how to insert facings and sleeves as your shirt starts to take shape.
Week 3 – Finishing Touches
Add the final details with buttonholes, buttons, and hemming.
Bring your curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm!
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is designed for slightly advanced beginners (18+) who have either:
• Completed our Slow Fashion Sewing Series for Adult Beginners, or
• Have the following skills:
- Able to use a sewing machine independently
- Understand how to read, place, and cut out a sewing pattern with some confidence
- Comfortable sewing seams and hems
- Able to follow sewing pattern instructions with some confidence
"With some confidence" means you can get started independently, even if you still have questions along the way.
Participants can also access The ReDress Hub space before Week 1 for help with pattern layout or cutting out fabric if needed.
What will I make?
You’ll create a shirt using one of two advanced beginner-friendly patterns:
- A Style Arc women’s shirt, or
- A Simplicity men’s shirt
(Scroll down to see example images of both patterns.)
What do I bring?
We’ll supply all materials, patterns, and equipment (including sewing machines)—you just need to bring:
- Fabric (we’ll email details once we have your measurements)
- Matching thread – choose good quality (e.g. Guttermann)
Optional but helpful:
- Dressmaker’s scissors (to finish cutting at home after Week 1)
- Dressmaking pins
An upcycled notebook will be provided for note-taking.
Fabric Guidelines
- We recommend starting with inexpensive, upcycled, or remnant fabric (doona covers work brilliantly for woven fabrics!).
- The ReDress Hub has a wide range of affordable remnant fabrics ($3.50–$8/m), with an extra 50% discount for participants.
Sewing Machine Use
You’ll need to be able to use a sewing machine confidently.
We provide machines, but you’re welcome to bring your own—just let us know in advance.
