Join us for a weekend of learning Slow Balboa with Lizou and Eloise! Slow Bal, or Slow Balboa, is a close embrace swing dance from the 1940s. You dance it to the slow jazz music of that time. It is a playful and above all elegant dance, influenced by historic dancers Dean and Nancy Raftery and Ray Cunningham.
“Slow Balboa is a dance like no other - so rhythmic, yet so smooth and elegant. I remember watching Dean and Kelly (Arsenault), thinking to myself, Lindy hops, Balboa pulses, but Slow Balboa swims across the floor.” - Mickey Fortanasce
We are excited to bring Slow Bal workshops to Vancouver for the first time! Classes will be suitable for dancers with no experience in Slow Balboa, however; it is recommended that you have partner dance experience, and are familiar with Balboa basics (upholds, downholds, come arounds and toss outs) - if you do not meet this criteria and would still like to join us, we’d love to have you! Send us a message or email and we can make a plan to get you up to speed before the workshops start.
Slow Bal is danced in close embrace (chest-to-chest.) If you are not comfortable with this proximity then this may not be the dance for you. That being said, each person in a partnership helps to create a comfortable embrace, and consent is still required.
