About this Event

The Oxford Kharkiv Association, the Wolfson College Film Society, and the Oxford University Ukrainian Society warmly invite you to an exclusive one-off screening of (2021), shown in Oxford for the first time and followed by a Q&A with the director . The screening is ponsored by Fresh Production UA.

Set in 1920s–30s Kharkiv, then the capital of Soviet Ukraine, this feature film tells the story of a remarkable generation of Ukrainian writers brought together in the purpose-built Slovo House. These figures became central to what is now known as the “Executed Renaissance” writers, a vibrant literary and artistic revival that played a defining role in the formation of modern Ukrainian culture.

Through a powerful dramatic narrative, the film portrays how this ambitious cultural project was gradually transformed into a mechanism of control, surveillance, and coercion, culminating in the persecution and execution of Ukraine’s intellectual elite. The destruction of this generation was not only a political tragedy, but a profound rupture in Ukraine’s cultural development, the consequences of which continue to resonate today.

By bringing this history to the screen, the film underscores the enduring importance of Ukrainian cultural memory and the ongoing effort to preserve it in the face of repeated attempts at its erasure. It is a feature version of Slovo House related to the documentary we screened recently.

Following the screening, there will be a online Q&A with the director, offering a rare opportunity to engage directly with the creative vision behind both of the films and their historical context.
After the Q&A session there will be a short action of support for the deported and forcefully displaced Ukrainian children by russia. #YellowBlueButterflies
