What’s happening?The Trustees of The Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey (GWTJ) are organising a group trek up Slieve Donard Mountain in County Down — the highest peak in the Mourne Mountains (850m / 2,789ft). The adventure will run from Saturday 25th to Tuesday 28th July 2026, with travel to Belfast on the 25th and return on the 28th. The ascent will take place on one of the middle days, weather depending.
Just over an hour from Belfast and beside the lively seaside town of Newcastle, this route follows a scenic trail through Donard Wood and along the cascading Glen River before reaching the iconic Mourne Wall and climbing to the summit. The trek covers approximately 9.5km and takes 5–6 hours, depending on pace and weather. It’s a challenging but rewarding experience, offering spectacular views across the Mournes and the Irish Sea.
Why are we doing it?
To raise vital funds and awareness for GWTJ’s ongoing projects in Nepal. Since 2014, GWTJ has raised over £2.2 million for Gurkha communities through your generosity and support from Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA). Our 2026–27 projects comprise providing seven Gurkha Villages in Nepal with Water and Sanitation supporting over 3,000 people.
How can you get involved?
We’d love you to join us! The cost will be £675–£700, which includes flights, accommodation, and logistics. Payment schedule:
• £250 deposit by 15th December 2025
• £225 by 15th March 2026
• £200 – £225 (TBC) final balance by 1st June 2026
Included in this is a £100 direct donation to GWT(J), double match funded by JOA, meaning your contribution has triple impact. You’ll need to bring your own personal equipment (a kit list will be provided), but everything else will be arranged for you.
