How do you talk about “the most gloriously unclassifiable American band in existence”? Emerging out of Oakland, California at the turn of the century, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum turn their concerts into rapturous cult-like ceremonies, complete with fantastic costumes, brilliant lights, Butoh dances, and puppet shows. The quintet’s music has been called art-rock, avant-prog metal, and grindcore funk theatre. We at Wavelength just think you should be there to experience it. This will mark SGM’s first appearance in Toronto since 2007, as they tour the globe in support of their latest album The Last Human Being, released in 2024 after a 13-year hiatus. A gathering not to be missed.
May 14 will be opened by Toronto’s own Dastgâmachine. The Persian psychedelic dub trio consists of Mahmood Schricker (electric setar), Caleb Klager (electronics), and Jason Rule (turntables). Together, they perform a unique form of psychedelia, incorporating the sounds and production techniques of dub, techno, and musique concrète into the Dastgâ system of arranging classical Persian art music. Part of the city’s vibrant global electronic music underground, Dastgâmachine honed their sound through their monthly “Infinite Jest” residency at Tapestry in Kensington Market. Their debut self-titled EP will be released in February 2025 through Mahmood’s label, Link Music Lab.
