True abiding happiness comes from within because everything changes. Circumstances may not change for the better, but you change for the better because you become a willing participant in life. We become willing when we become still and the ego stops negotiating. Disruptions to our plans are not punishment, they are openings to something higher and better. When adversity arises, meditate rather than mediate and look for the gifts.
