The Magic Shop, Sobriety Shop and Sealing The Deal
From Stuck to Choice is an experiential psychodrama workshop that centres on agency, responsibility, and the rediscovery of choice. Using the classic Magic Shop and its recovery-informed adaptation, the Sobriety Shop, participants are invited to actively examine the internal “deals” that keep them stuck—and to consciously renegotiate them.
Rather than focusing on insight alone, this method brings choice into action. Participants externalise qualities that no longer serve them—such as denial, fear, resentment, shame, or avoidance—and are invited to choose what they are willing to give up in order to receive what they truly want: courage, acceptance, self-compassion, honesty, emotional regulation, or connection. The Shopkeeper role makes the cost of change visible, supporting ownership without blame.
In the Sobriety Shop, the structure is carefully adapted for addiction and recovery work. Clients explore how old survival strategies once protected them, while also confronting how those same patterns now limit freedom. Emphasis is placed on choice as a moment-to-moment practice, reinforcing recovery-supportive roles such as accountability, patience, self-leadership, and willingness to ask for help.
The final phase, Sealing the Deal, anchors choice into commitment. Through embodied action, role practice, and group witnessing, participants consolidate their chosen exchanges—transforming insight into lived experience and increasing the likelihood of sustainable change.

- Interactive ways to engage group members and assess readiness for choice
- A clear, step-by-step structure for facilitating the Magic Shop and Sobriety Shop
- How to work with resistance by reframing it as information rather than opposition
- Ways to support spontaneity and creativity while maintaining safety and containment
- How to help clients seal new choices through action, role integration, and closure

Who Is This Workshop For?
This workshop is suitable for psychodrama trainees, therapists, and group facilitators seeking to strengthen their directing skills and deepen their use of action methods.
