About this Event
From Resistance to Readiness
Using the Fine Art of Doubling in Therapy & Groups
Many therapists and facilitators notice that when clients feel pressured to “open up” or change, they often withdraw further. Psychodrama offers a different and compassionate lens. As Zerka Moreno taught, resistance is not opposition—it is a sign that a person is not yet warmed up or ready.
Rather than challenging defenses, psychodrama focuses on building safety, connection, and emotional readiness. Doubling is a relational technique that helps people feel understood by giving gentle voice to what may be present but unspoken. When people feel less alone inside, anxiety decreases and participation becomes possible.
This experiential workshop explores how doubling can be used to support engagement, emotional awareness, and trust—especially when clients appear hesitant, guarded, or stuck.
“Resistance is not opposition; it is a lack of warm-up.”
— Zerka T. Moreno
(In psychodrama, the task is not to push past resistance, but to increase readiness.)
This workshop will teach you how to:
- Support hesitant or guarded clients without confrontation or pressure
- Help individuals tune into emotions they may struggle to name or express
- Increase safety, trust, and participation in therapy and group settings
- Use reflective language to reduce anxiety and invite engagement
Facilitator’s Invitation
"You are warmly invited into a learning space that values curiosity and respect. This workshop is not about “breaking through resistance”, but about learning how to accompany people when they are not yet ready to move. Whether you work one-to-one or with groups, you’ll be supported to practise gentle, relational skills that invite participation rather than demand it. Come as you are—hesitation included."
-Sharmini Winslow
