Sister Jazz Orchestra is proud to be a Supporting Sponsor and headline performer at the 2023 Surrey Schools International Jazz Festival!
This free public performance opens with two sets of best-of-the-best student
performances:
Vocal Jazz Showcase (highlights from Day 1 of the festival)
Rep Jazz Bands (3 all-star big bands with students nominated by their teachers)
The closing set by Sister Jazz Orchestra will feature big band standards by George Gershwin, Benny Carter and Peggy Lee, works by Canadian jazz icons Christine Jensen, Ian McDougall, Jodi Proznick and Chelsea McBride, and three exciting newly-
commissioned works for the band by emerging writers Emma Murray and Shruti Ramani.
We also present a vocal tour-de-force with singers Shruti Ramani, Bonnie Northgraves, Shannon Thue, and Jessica Heaven!
FREE ADMISSION – No reserved seating.
Donations to Surrey Schools Meal Program will be gratefully accepted.

About Sister Jazz Orchestra
Unique in Canada, Sister Jazz Orchestra is a powerhouse 18-woman jazz ensemble
showcasing Vancouver’s top female jazz artists.
Directed by Christian Morrison, SJO has a mission: Empowering today’s jazzwomen to
inspire tomorrow’s. This straight-ahead jazz celebration also shines a light on female writers
who have influenced the past 9 decades of jazz, including the up-and-comers who are
redefining big band jazz for the next generation. This captivating musical journey of
discovery will leave you energized, moved and enriched. Bring the girls and young women

Shruti Ramani, Guest Vocalist and Composer
Vocalist/composer Shruti Ramani is an innovative and emerging artist in the Canadian jazz scene. Hailing from Mumbai, India, with a degree in Hindustani music and a Bachelor in Jazz Studies (Performance – Vocal) from Capilano University, she now leads the
collaborative ensemble Raagaverse. Her original music is an eclectic and dynamic combination of the Indian and Jazz traditions. Sister Jazz Orchestra is pleased to present
two newly-commissioned works by Shruti in this performance.
