About this Event
What
We are back at it again for year number four! Join the Siuslaw Watershed Council and McKenzie River Trust as we remove trash from the Siuslaw River estuary, and manage invasive species on Wilbur Island.
Why
Estuaries are incredibly productive ecosystems that provide critical services to people and wildlife alike, from clean water to flood mitigation to carbon sequestration to crucial salmon habitat. Keeping them free of harmful waste and managing invasive species helps us, our community, and our planet.
How
Participants can expect a fun day of volunteering, traveling by motor boat across the river to the cleanup site. Snacks will be provided; personal water bottles are strongly recommended. Participants may choose to remove invasive species, trash, or both.
Participation will require entering and exiting watercraft via dock and shore, walking on uneven slippery and/or muddy surfaces, and some stooping/bending/lifting. Muck boots are strongly recommended, as we will need to navigate tidal mudflat at certain times throughout the day.
Acknowledgements
Thank you to Coastal Transfer and Recycling for their generous donation of a dumpster for the event, our volunteer boat captains for ferrying us (and the garbage!) to and from the site, and to the Port of Siuslaw for the use of the Cushman Marina.
