Sir Samuel Griffith and the Writing of the Queensland Criminal Code

The Queensland Criminal Code, which was prepared over some 5 years, 1896-1900, was said by his biographer Roger B Joyce to be Griffith’s “major, though not his only, contribution to law reform.”

This Talk will briefly examine the circumstances giving rise to the development of the Code, its historical development and its evolutionary influence upon Australian and International Criminal Jurisprudence.

Michael Halliday is Vice- President of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. He is a retired Barrister-at Law, Magistrate and Coroner and continues an active professional interest in the advancement of legal and medical education, ethics, discipline, regulation and practice with a continuing association with the Queensland Bar Practice Course and the Queensland University of Technology. Michael has special extra-curricular interests in both Ancient and Australian History and has regularly lectured upon such subjects.
