A unique, collective sensorial experience
About this Event

In the lead up to the Goldsmiths BA Curating third year exhibition Re-Alignments: New Grammars of Folklore, Story and Myth, this workshop invites participants to respond to photographic slides in the Women’s Art Library through stories and songs. Exploring acclaimed artworks from women including Paula Rego, known as a ‘painter of stories’, whose work revolutionised the way in which women are represented, participants will create a unique, collective sensorial experience through listening, remembering lullabies, childhood stories and memories that have been passed through generations to us.

Where participants are interested, results of the workshop will be included in our exhibition in the Professor Stuart Hall exhibition space in the Middle of May.

The Women’s Art Library is curated by Althea Greenan. Located at Goldsmiths Library Special Collections, began as an artists' initiative and continued to run a membership scheme for women artists for 20 years. The scheme encouraged women artists to document their work and deposit photographic slides and any other information to form a unique resource. WAL is reflective of Goldsmiths' influential position in the creative and performing arts, and involvement with the culture of local communities as well as the broader society in contemporary Britain and beyond. Slides, which evolved from magic lanterns to create phantasmagoric experiences, were also widely used in the 20th century for both amateur and professional photography, and while they have been largely replaced by digital photography, they still have a dedicated following of photographers and enthusiasts who appreciate their unique characteristics.

Please bring stories and songs that have been important to you.
