About this Event
A practical beginner-friendly dressmaking workshop designed to introduce you to the foundations of garment making through creating a simple skirt.
In this hands-on session, students will learn how to:
- Take accurate body measurements
- Design and draft a simple skirt pattern
- Understand basic cutting techniques
- Create and fit a mock-up toile
- Select suitable fabrics, tools, needles and threads
- Gain confidence using sewing equipment and dressmaking techniques
This class is ideal for beginners wanting to learn the fundamentals of dressmaking and develop the confidence to start making their own clothing.
By the end of the session, students should have completed a mock-up skirt, made fitting adjustments where needed, and begun the assembly process. The disassembly technique may also be explored to assist with fitting and alterations. The completed mock-up can then be used as a reusable pattern where pattern paper is unavailable. Depending on progress, students may also begin cutting into their final fabric and start garment construction.
Please bring:
- Approx. 2–3 metres of basic calico
- Sewing scissors
- Pins and needles
- Pen and pencil
- A ruler (30cm or larger if possible)
Any additional fabrics or trims you may wish to use for your final skirt project are welcome.
Janome sewing machines will be provided on the day. You will also receive a 10% discount card to use in-store
