About this Event
On this walk, participants will visit Silver Lake’s most famous micro-neighborhood, Sunset Junction, as well as Silver Lake’s only pedestrian plaza, Sunset Triangle; both of which began as rail transit junctions. The former acquired additional significance as the epicenter of Silver Lake’s gay community and the latter was built for Silver Lake’s first rail transit line -- the Los Angeles Ostrich Farm Railway.
Along the way, you’ll climb some public stairways, climb some steep hills, visit the city’s smallest community garden, walk over a channelized spring, visit a film studio associated with an early female filmmaker, discover the city’s original northwest corner, visit the birthplace of the nation’s oldest Asian American theater company, and take in many fine examples of residential architecture – including several stunning designs from Rudolph Schindler.
Please be prepared: Bring water, snacks, sunblock, and whatever else you might need. Check weather beforehand and wear comfortable shoes and clothes. I've been encouraged to emphasize that these walks are fairly rigorous. If, for any reason, you need to leave the walk at any time, I will help you figure out how to get back to the starting point.
We'll begin and end the walk at the Sunset Junction Plaza (next to the historic Jiffy Lube). There's a Metro Bike Share station there and a Metro bus stop, Sunset / Sanborn, served by the 2 route so consider leaving the car at home. Don't count on there being any public restrooms along the walk although I think there are porta-potties at the Silver Lake Farmers Market, which we will pass.
Tips are always appreciated!
