Paekakariki actor and playwright Jan Bolwell, is bringing Silent Spring Revisited - Rachel Carson’s Fight for Nature, to the Globe Theatre. This is the first time her highly acclaimed solo play will be seen in outside the Wellington region.
Bolwell’s North Otago farming grandmother Hilda, introduced her to
the writings of the great American environmentalist when she was a child.
‘I have Gran’s first edition copy of Silent Spring, which I treasure and use in
my play. With climate change and the challenges of preserving the environ
ment in our contemporary world, it feels timely to tell the story of one of the
world’s great pioneering conservationists.’
The play also features the words of New Zealand fresh water ecologist, Mike Joy who is an outspoken critic of the government’s environmental policies.
‘We have included some of Mike’s challenges to the government, because we feel his message is so important for all New Zealanders.’
Bolwell has a virtual conversation with Mike Joy in the play and members of the audience also interact with the actor in her role as Rachel Carson.
An exciting creative team has worked collaboratively with Bolwell on this play, director Annie Ruth and composer Jan Bolton.
