Experience a masterpiece of 1920s cinema within a masterpiece of 1920s architecture!Boston Avenue United Methodist Church is excited to invite you to a unique musical experience: a silent film accompanied by a live, improvised organ soundtrack.
Join us Sunday, March 29 at 5:00 p.m. in our historic sanctuary for a screening of Cecil B. DeMille’s 1928 epic silent film, “The King of Kings,” on large screens (temporarily installed for this event only).
Accompanying the film will be world-class organist David Briggs, who will provide a live, improvised soundtrack. Over the past two and a half decades, Mr. Briggs has earned an international reputation for his brilliant improvisations to classic silent movies. The performance reflects the tradition of silent film accompaniment, once a staple of the early 20th century, with music created in real time to follow the action on screen.
DeMille’s "The King of Kings" is a landmark of silent cinema, a sweeping epic that portrays the life of Jesus with a scale and reverence that remains striking a century later. Featuring thousands of extras and pioneering cinematic techniques, it is widely considered one of the most influential religious films ever made. While DeMille was finalizing this masterpiece in 1927, our own iconic building was taking shape here in Tulsa, and was completed just two years later in 1929. Come and experience this film within a setting from the same creative era!
Free and open to the public, this event offers a distinctive way to experience the organ, the building, and a historic film, while also serving as a thoughtful lead-in to Holy Week. We hope to see you there!
This event is presented through our Fred Elder Recital Series endowment.
