Tom Mix was the first superstar of westerns, starring in nearly 300 films in a career that spanned four decades. In SKY HIGH, Mix portrays Grant Newbury, a deputy inspector of immigration stationed along the U.S.-Mexico border near Calexico, tasked with breaking up a smuggling ring that is transporting Chinese immigrants into the U.S. This plot point is a stark reminder that the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act and its successor legislation extended all the way to the 1940s, as well as having surprising resonance to the highly-charged topic of immigration today. But Newbury's real task is to play the hero, which he does impressively here, both on horseback and from the cockpit of an airplane. The smugglers' trail ultimately leads to the Grand Canyon, which is photographed spectacularly and provides a unique setting for many climbing stunts and serpentine chases.
