About this Event
Silent Book Club was created in 2016 and now has nearly 2,000 chapters worldwide, including St. Catharines' very own which was created in 2024. We typically try to host a meeting at least once a month, often at a local business or one of the libraries in the region. During the warmer months, we also try to host some meetings outside to take advantage of the beautiful weather. Our meeting structure is typically around half an hour for people to arrive, settle in, and participate in a round of introductions (very low pressure, your name and what you brought to read). We then begin one hour of silent reading. For some people, this may look like a physical book, an e-book on a reader or tablet, and some folks also choose to listen to audiobooks through their headphones quietly while doing another activity like colouring. After the hour expires, the hosts may offer the option to participate in a small crafting activity like bookmark making or book bedazzling, or you may continue to read. In all, the meetings are around two hours long.
When you come to a meeting, all you'll need is the book you're wanting to read (in whichever format). If we're ever outside, we'll recommend you bring a lawn or beach chair and water to the location.
Silent Book Club is a safe space to come and engage with others in a respectful way. We welcome members of the 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and other marginalized communities.
