About this Event

Iconicity, the connection, between the form and meaning of signs has implications in the world of signed languages. In this development session we will explore the impact of iconicity on both linguistic understanding and practical application within the sign language community.

Participants will be guided through an intriguing exploration of how iconicity manifests in signed languages. Recent research has debunked beliefs that considered iconicity as an anomaly instead highlighting its vital role in shaping the landscape of visual languages.

Throughout this session attendees will gain insights into key areas;

(i) Enhancing Language Acquisition; Discover how iconicity greatly contributes to acquiring sign language skills. Evidence will be presented demonstrating how iconic signs aid comprehension and improve memory retention offering practitioners perspectives on effective teaching strategies.

(ii) The Iconic Lexicon; Dive into an examination of the composition of sign language lexicon and uncover the presence of signs within it. By exploring illuminating examples participants will gain an appreciation, for how iconicity enriches expression.

(iii) Ease of Grasp; Discover the idea that signs representing actions, like "SWIM" in British Sign Language (BSL) are incredibly easy to understand. Gerardo Ortega will share research findings that shed light on the processes behind this phenomenon providing insights for communication improvement.

Practical Implications; This session goes beyond understanding. Offers practical implications for sign language practitioners. Gain a nuanced comprehension of how iconicity can impact contexts of sign language interpretation allowing you to enhance your effectiveness as a practitioner.

Join us for a webinar-style session that bridges the gap between theoretical research and practical application.
