This month's feature program--a dance performance by the --offers a creative extension of the exhibition's themes, exploring connections beyond D.C. and beyond Chinatown.
Seeds of Toil: Three Asian American Stories of Resilience and Resistance draws upon national narratives of resilience through powerful choreography. The performance draws inspiration from distinct historical moments: Koreans working on Hawaiian pineapple plantations in the early twentieth century, Japanese Americans unjustly incarcerated during World War II, and the solidary between Filipino and Mexican farmworkers in 1960s California. Together, Sightlines and Seeds of Toil reflect on how local and national Asian American histories resonate with themes of resilience, resistance, and community.
Following the performance, there will be a Q&A with choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess and curator Sojin Kim.
Presented by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, the Sightlines exhibition is on view on the first floor of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
