Vlaemsch (chez moi) is the first performance by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui to be scheduled at DE SINGEL since 2019. In his latest creation, the Belgian-Moroccan choreographer confronts the Flemish roots he inherited from his mother’s side. For this he collaborates with visual artist Hans Op de Beeck, musician Floris De Rycker and fashion designer Jan-Jan Van Essche. Together they build a bridge to the prosperous Flanders of the 15th century, when the region’s reputation was promulgated by its internationally renowned artists.
Due to the striking parallels between the artistry of then and now, and with the same sense of experiment as their predecessors, the four contemporary ‘Flemish Masters’ seek out a more pluralistic national identity. What does it mean as an artist to be a Fleming when art does not stop at borders? Cherkaoui and his team try to find out in this aesthetic and philosophical manifesto.

Met Vlaemsch (chez moi) staat voor het eerst sinds 2019 weer een voorstelling van Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui op de planken van DE SINGEL. De Belgisch-Marokkaanse choreograaf gaat in zijn nieuwste creatie de confrontatie aan met de Vlaamse roots die hij van moederszijde heeft meegekregen. Daarvoor werkt hij samen met beeldend kunstenaar Hans Op de Beeck, muzikant Floris De Rycker en modeontwerper Jan-Jan Van Essche. Samen slaan ze een brug naar het welvarende Vlaanderen van de 15de eeuw, toen de reputatie van de regio werd uitgedragen door zijn internationaal gerenommeerde kunstenaars.
Omwille van de frappante parallellen tussen het kunstenaarsschap van toen en nu, en met dezelfde zin voor experiment als hun voorgangers, gaan de vier hedendaagse ‘Vlaamse Meesters’ op zoek naar een meer pluralistische nationale identiteit. Wat betekent het om als kunstenaar Vlaming te zijn wanneer kunst niet stopt bij grenzen? Cherkaoui en zijn team zoeken het uit in dit esthetisch en filosofisch manifest.
