Some pairings feel unexpected until you hear them, then they make perfect sense. Shy FX and Mala, two artists who have shaped the direction of British electronic music in entirely different ways, come together for a rare one-off performance at City Recital Hall.
Eora’s own dub princesses, Alilia & Anusha, take charge, setting the tone of the evening with a B2B that will warm your toes.
Shy FX has long carried the weight and brilliance of sound system culture into the present day. A producer whose influence sits far beyond jungle and drum & bass, he has continually redefined how bass, rhythm and UK club music speak to one another. “Original Nuttah” didn’t just break through, it changed what breakthrough meant. Since then, through Ebony Recordings and Digital Soundboy, his work has moved between reggae, rave, hip-hop and soul with a clarity and instinct that few can match.
Mala, meanwhile, forged a path of his own. A founding member of DMZ and the driving force behind Deep Medi Musik, he helped shape dubstep’s earliest language, opening doors for a global movement while remaining rooted in community, craft and collaboration. His catalogue spans the iconic (“Changes,” “Anti War Dub,” “Left Leg Out”) to the expansive: Mala in Cuba and Mirrors, two albums that connected London to the wider world with depth, curiosity and spiritual weight.
Together, they represent two sides of a shared lineage: artists who have spent decades evolving without dilution, staying true to their foundations while pushing sound into new terrain. This isn’t a nostalgia moment, it’s a conversation between two visionaries whose work continues to influence the present.
For one night only in Sydney, Shy FX and Mala bring their worlds into the same room. Expect the low-end to speak, the history to resonate, and the future to take shape in real time.
A singular meeting of two forces still defining the culture.
