Please join us on Tuesday, February 17 at 5:00–6:30pm for a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper prepared by the Men's Group. All are invited, and there is no charge to attend.Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the 40-day period of Lent that begins with Ash Wednesday. The name derives from the Germanic-Old English word 'shrive,' which means 'absolve.' Traditionally, Christians would go on this day to be absolved of their misdeeds before the penitential season of Lent.
As in the Catholic tradition of Mardi Gras feasting and others around the world, the Anglican practice of eating pancakes on this day stems from the need to use up rich foods like butter, milk, and eggs before the Lenten season of fasting.
Shrove Tuesday is also the day on which churches burn the palms that were blessed during the previous year's Palm Sunday processions to be administered during the next day's Ash Wednesday services. We will burn last year's palms in the fireplace during the evening's activities.
Come, eat, learn, and enjoy!
