As part of Christchurch City Libraries' Speaker Series @ Tūranga, Mathateca present Show Your Working: presentations by professionals about the interesting ways they use maths in their work. Discover how maths helps people do their jobs, from surveyors, to software engineers, to the seed industry.

How Surveyors use Maths
Phil Dewar and Alex Liggett are Senior Surveyors at Fox and Associates, a Christchurch firm known for its innovation and professional excellence in 'creating legacies with land'. Phil and Alex will cover two very different aspects of the work of surveyors, a field rich in mathematical challenges. Alex will talk about the traditional work of a cadastral surveyor, defining property boundaries. Phil will talk about point clouds - how they can be captured and used to solve measurement problems.

Statistics: The Backbone of the Global Seed Industry
Kelly Evans will discuss how statistics is the backbone of the global seed industry, from accurate sampling to rigorous analysis of quality testing results. She was on the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA, the global governing body for seed quality testing) Statistics Committee and Chair of the New Zealand Seed Testing Society (NZSTS).

Software Engineering for Geoscientists
Kelsey Vavasour is a Senior Software Engineer at Seequent. She spends her day to day working on the backend of cloud hosted software products for geoscientists, primarily one called Imago which is used for managing and analysing photographic data taken while drilling. Imago processes, displays, and analyses images and related data, including interactive features to highlight areas of interest.
Not every day can be super exciting feature development! There's a lot of math in the development and support of software. Creating any complex program requires application of mathematical logic, as well as understanding usage patterns to estimate how you need to scale your services and monitor system health and performance with lots of pretty graphs.
