Short Film Screenings

Many wonderful short films are being made in India. Filmmakers are at work in their own regions, devising bold, new ways to experiment with form and technique. Short Film Corner hopes to be a showcase for these films and open a dialogue between the filmmakers and their audiences.

Tumhaari Baari, Jo

Hindi with English Subtitles (15 mins)

Every Sunday, Jo’s family gathers for their beloved Scrabble ritual—an oasis of laughter and playful banter. But this Sunday, Jo (22), who has so far concealed her sexuality from her family, decides it’s time to speak the truth. As her tiles spell out the word ‘LESBIAN’, the room shifts. Her mother, Geetanjali (52), objects to the word; her father, Navneet (56), brushes it off with a joke, oblivious to its deeper meaning. Only her brother Chirag (29) grasps the significance: Jo is coming out. Tumhari Baari, Jo (Jo’s Turn) is a tender, gently humorous portrait of a young woman’s cultural expectations. In this moment of truth, Jo discovers that the words we dare to play can change the rules of love, identity and belonging.

Directed by Vinoo Choliparambil

Kovarty

Malayalam with English Subtitles (29 mins)

In the early 1980s, in a government office somewhere in Kerala, a brand new typewriter loses its heart to Daisy, a young typist. Daisy, recently heartbroken, finds companionship in this shiny new machine, named Qwerty. The “love story” is set in a village that is witnessing its own changing dynamics.

Directed by Rohin Raveendran Nair

Pressure Cooker

Hindi with English Subtitles (15 mins)

In the India of 1990s, which hadn’t yet opened up the glitter of the free market and unimaginable choices, monotony had a flavour attached to it and the change of anything, especially that of a kitchen appliance, was a deeply emotional issue. A lonely homemaker from middle-class Mumbai starts getting a taste of novelty through a metaphorical new automatic pressure cooker and the attraction of a younger man. Will she be able to allow new entries into the floodgates of her world?

Pressure Cooker is an effort to look at the changing worlds of commodity and sexuality of the era through the eyes of a middle-aged Mumbai woman.

Directed by Heena D’Souza

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session.

An NCPA Presentation in collaboration with White Wall Screenings
