Kari is 19 years old and was a sophomore at Iowa State and serving as the president of her sorority when she began experiencing persistent headaches and neck pain. After several medical appointments without answers, she was referred for further imaging. On February 7, a scan revealed a lemon-sized mass in her brain that required immediate surgery. That same week, Kari underwent two brain surgeries at the University of Iowa. She was diagnosed with a high-grade glioma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Kari is undergoing chemotherapy and proton radiation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. After completing this initial phase of therapy, she will continue treatment for up to one year or longer at Duke, where she will have access to cutting-edge therapies and a potential clinical trial.
Through it all, Kari has shown incredible faith and courage. In Kari’s words:
“I have never been more scared in my life...yet at the same time I felt a presence I can’t explain. I knew God was holding my hand through every moment… This is going to be a long journey, and it won’t be an easy one. But I know that with God by my side, I will get through it.
Kari is brave, resilient, and truly sunshine in human form. She is deeply loved by everyone who knows her.
