Nestled near Ramanagara, about 55 kilometers from Bengaluru, the Sholay Hills Trek—also known as Ramadevara Betta—offers an exciting blend of natural beauty, history, and cinematic nostalgia. The trek covers approximately 3 kilometers to and fro and usually takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete. It’s an easy-to-moderate climb, involving around 350 to 450 steps that lead to the ancient Sri Pattabhirama Temple at the summit. This makes it a perfect outing for beginners, families, and children alike. From the top, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the granite hills surrounding Ramanagara town. The landscape here captures the rugged charm that made it the iconic setting of the legendary Bollywood movie Sholay—hence the popular nickname, Sholay Betta.Beyond its cinematic fame, Ramadevara Betta is steeped in rich cultural and historical significance. Local lore holds that Lord Rama, accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana, once stayed here during his 14-year exile.
The temple at the hill’s summit, over a thousand years old, enshrines the deities of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman—carved magnificently from a single stone. History enthusiasts can also spot remnants of a fort wall believed to have been constructed by Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru. Surrounding the area is the Ramadevarabetta Vulture Sanctuary, India’s first dedicated safe haven for endangered species like the Long-billed and Egyptian Vultures.
The trek itinerary includes exploring the filming spots of Sholay, making it a nostalgic journey through one of Indian cinema’s most beloved landscapes.
