The Psalms of Ascent, once sung by Jewish pilgrims climbing the steps of the Temple in Jerusalem, also became central to European Christian musical traditions, though Jewish and Christian practices often developed in isolation. A striking exception was Salamone Rossi, a Jewish composer in Mantua who blended early Baroque innovations with Hebrew liturgical music, publishing his groundbreaking anthology Ha’shirim asher li-Shlomo (1623). This concert unites Rossi’s settings of the psalms of pilgrimage with those of Monteverdi, Purcell, and Bach, creating a rare dialogue between traditions around the shared themes of journey, struggle, and hope.
