Shipwrecks & Bridges: The Great Lakes as Links & BarriersThursday, October 2 at 2pm AT BUCHANAN AREA SENIOR CENTER
Presented by Ruth Writer, former Buchanan High School History Teacher, join us at the Buchanan Area Senior Center for this special One Book, One Buchanan event to explore 2025's theme, “Our Nature.” All ages are welcome and no registration is required.
Our Great Lakes serve as a major link and yet a barrier at the same time. For centuries this massive fresh water has been used as a major means of transporting people and goods. It serves a major highway linking the interior of North America to the world. Unfortunately, some of the ships never reach their destination due to unforeseen obstacles. From the Griffon and the Eastland to the Edmund Fitzgerald, shipwrecks become legends. Learn about some of these historic events. With land transportation the Great Lakes become more of a barrier that must be crossed. Three land connections between Michigan and Canada will also be discussed, including the new Gordie Howe International Bridge.
