Shinyribs embodies and emanates pure, authentic musical joy. Pulling from a ragbag of Texas Blues, New Orleans grooves, and horn-driven Gulf Coast R&B, this Austin-based 9-piece showband smears everything with a deep soul twang and wraps it up in roots that swing. You are led by the irrepressible Kevin Russell, into a charismatic world of colorful suits, fantastic shoes, debonair chapeaus and dirty dancing. The nimble Ribs band pivots on a dime, always in time with their mercurial leader. Their genre-defying acrobatics are something to behold. The Tijuana Trainwreck Horns and Shiny Soul Sisters add glitz and gravy to the fleetfooted extravaganza. Effortlessly Mr. Russell swaps electric guitar for a ukulele and never falls short of creating a hip-shaking, mind-blowing, cinematic experience. After a Shinyribs performance your cheeks may hurt for up to 24hrs. But you’ll notice a new pep in your step. The most fun one can have without disturbing the peace. It's the opposite of a citizen's arrest.
Shinyribs was named Musician of the Year (2023) and Best Austin Band (2017, 2018) at the Austin Chronicle’s Austin Music Awards. More awards include: Album of the Year for "I Got Your Medicine" (2017), and Best 2020- Themed Song for "Stay Home" (2020). Additional accolades include song "Poor People's Store" included in S5 Ep 8 of TV's Fargo and "Who Built The Moon" created into a children's book with the help of illustrator Katie Terrell Ramos.
Russell’s Shinyribs have recorded a total of eight albums: 2010’s Well After Awhile; Gulf Coast Museum (2013); Okra Candy (2015); 2017’s award-winning I Got Your Medicine; The Kringle Tingle (2018) a compilation of holiday standards and new compositions; and the soulful release, Fog & Bling (2019); Late Night TV Gold, (2021) and Shinyribs' latest release, Transit Damage (2023).
