About this Event
About Workshop
Join us for a special workshop to create your own traditional Japanese New Year decoration: a shimenawa wreath. In this hands-on session, you will work with authentic shimenawa and mizuhiki from Japan, preserved greenery and dried flowers, ensuring your creation will last for a long time with proper care to craft a meaningful and beautiful piece for the season.
Participants will design and assemble their own creations, ensuring that each wreath is a unique reflection of personal style and creativity. Please note that the photos provided are samples, and the final design will be entirely up to you.
The base shimenawa wreath measures approximately 9 inches (22 cm) in diameter; however, the size may vary depending on your arrangement, with potential for larger designs.
All materials will be provided. Complete beginners are welcome! This is a wonderful opportunity to learn something new, create a meaningful decoration, and connect with others in a warm and festive atmosphere. We are excited to celebrate the New Year together! Plus, you'll get to take home your own handmade shimenawa wreath to cherish and display.
About Shimenawa/Mizuhiki
Shimenawa are sacred ropes traditionally made of twisted straw, used in Japanese culture to mark purified spaces and ward off evil spirits. They symbolize protection and good fortune.
Mizuhiki are decorative cords made from tightly wound paper, often used in Japan for gift wrapping and ceremonial decorations. They represent unity and connection.
