In this one-day workshop, create this stunning shibori pattern with instructor Kathleen Goddu. Shibori is referred to as “Squeeze” in Japan. Shibori comes from the verb “shiboru” which means “to wring, squeeze and press” in Japanese. It is a dye resist process of stitching, folding and clamping, wrapping fabric around a pole, plaiting, etc.
It is called Yanagi or Spider and Willow. There will be a minimum of stitching, then wrapping your fabric onto a rope and dyeing it in indigo. You will come away with a gorgeous piece of fabric approximately 12″ x 16″ that could be used to make a pillow cover, wall hanging or whatever else you choose.
Students need to bring: small fabric scissors, dishwashing gloves, apron or wear old clothes they don’t mind getting dye on.
The instructor will supply everything else including fabric, rope, thread, needles, dye, and a handout.
No experience required. This class also produces guaranteed laughter and new friends.
This class is planned to be outdoors under tents (group photos show prior shibori workshops at Shaker Village with Mary Delano)
Class size: 5 minimum, 8 max
Kathleen Goddu lives and creates her art in Brunswick, Me. She has been practicing the fabric arts of shibori and sashiko for almost two decades, and shows her work locally amidst the vibrant Maine art scene. Her work illustrates a love of nature she gained as a child growing up near Little Sebago Lake.
With a degree in art and speech pathology Kathleen spent most of her 24-year career helping others find their voice. In 2000, she discovered a calling to express her own through Japanese textile art forms. Kathleen hosts workshops when she can, teaching and sharing her love of shibori and sashiko.
