HISTORY
Shepton Mallet prison dates back as far as 1625. When the prison first opened men, women and children were all held together in poor conditions so diseases were easily spread like gaol fever.
From the 1800s the prison was expanded by the Victorians and the tread wheel was build. Also a second storey was added to each wing.
The prison was closed in 1930 due to low numbers but shortly after in 1939 the prison reopened at the start of WWII and become a British Military prison, known as the Glasshouse. This changed in 1942 after the US entered the conflict and took over the prison. At one time between 1942-45, over 700 US servicemen were incarcerated here. 16 US servicemen were also hanged and a further 2 executed by firing squad during these years.
Throughout the war, the old women’s wing became a Top-Secret repository for the National Archives as three hundred tonnes of records and archive materials moved from the Public Record Office in London for safe keeping; this included such priceless items as the Magna Carta and Domesday Book. The prison was then returned to civilian used in 1966, turning into a category C prison housing up to 260 prisoners at any one time. Shepton Mallet then closed its doors as a prison for good in 2013.
There are 7 unmarked graves with the prison walls which belong to the 7 Judicial executions that took place between 1889 to 1926.
During WWII 18 prisoners were executed in the gallows the Americans had purposely built. Their bodies were buried in Brookwood Cemetery for a short period of time before being exhumed. Remains of 17 prisoners were relocated to an American cemetery and France whilst 1 was flown back to America.

REPORTED ACTIVITY
Shepton Mallet is said to be haunted by many spirits, One being the white lady who dates back to the late 170O and has been seen mainly A wing although she has also reportedly seen in other places throughout the prison.
Will you be brave enough to hold a lone vigil in one of the cells? And what spirits will you make contact with in the morgue?!
