About this Event
Join artists Nayaab Mahomed and Tazim Hamid from the Woven Collective for an introduction to sheesha embroidery, also known as mirror work embroidery. This traditional textile technique uses small mirrors stitched onto fabric with decorative embroidery to create intricate and reflective designs.
As part of our Heritage Sundays programme, the session will begin at DMU Museum with a short exploration of the Karun Thakar Collection, focusing on examples featuring sheesha embroidery.
We will then head over to Leicester Castle Great Hall where you will be guided through the basics of the technique, learning how to secure mirrors by stitching a grid around them and decorative framing stitches, including chain stitch, satin stitch, and herringbone stitch, to enhance your designs.
This workshop is suitable for beginners, and anyone interested in textile heritage, embroidery, and traditional craft practices.
