Join Jeff Burchstead of Buckwheat Blossom Farm for a demonstration of traditional hand-shearing sheep from his flock. Shearing sheep is an integral part of caring for sheep and allows for fiber to be collected for yarn and other wool-based products.Jeff has been shearing sheep for about 20 years and now shears an estimated 3,000 sheep per year! Jeff offers professional shearing services throughout Maine, in addition to managing his own sheep operation alongside side his wife, Amy. Together, along with three children, they own and operate Buckwheat Blossom Farm in Wiscasset, a small, horse-powered, organic farm. You can learn more about their farm here or check out their booth at the BTLT Saturday Farmers Market at Crystal Spring Farm!
This is a great opportunity for all ages to learn from a farmer about raising sheep, shearing practices, and how all that wool ends up as a sweater! There will be two shearing demonstrations, at 9:00am and 11:00am.
This event will be taking place during the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust Saturday Farmers Market at Crystal Spring Farm.
This event will not take place in the event of rain.
